Review by Dave Carpenter for The Power of Personal Branding: Creating Celebrity Status with Your Target Audience
Rating:
Because of the importance of personal branding to my consulting clients, I am always interested in the latest thinking on personal branding so that I can recommend readings to my clients. Tim O’Brien has just written his first book on the subject and it is absolutely a worthwhile addition to the best books on the subject.
The reigning champion on this subject has been Peter Montoya’s “The Brand Called You.” And, as enjoyable as O’Brien’s book was, it did not dethrone the champion as the best on the subject.
The strength of O’Brien’s book is his focus on the personal characteristics needed to build a great personal brand. Other authors have done an equally good job at relating characteristics of great personal brands. But, O’Brien does a fantastic job of weaving throughout the book just how much effort is involved in building and sustaining a great brand.
Readers looking for a quick and easy way to build a strong personal brand will NOT find it here. O’Brien articulates a need for diligent ACTION and a receptivity to candid feedback so as to understand one’s starting point. He makes no apologies…and none are needed…for the effort involved in building a great brand. Given the potential value of a great personal brand, to expect it could easily be built is obviously not in keeping with the natural laws of cause and effect.
There is much to like about this book. Like me, O’Brien is a big fan of the seasoned, principled wisdom of Zig Ziglar. I also liked the authors willingness to share the changes he believes are necessary to improve his own brand. And, his succinct use of illustrations from clients was effective in driving home his many learning points.
Because of my personal believe that woman have become the driving force in so many areas of business (and beyond), I believe his business and his messaging will make a quantum leap when he includes more female success stories from his personal knowledge. This point is NOT to suggest that women will find this book other than to be very useful. The book has universal wisdom.
This book represents the emergence of O’Brien on to the national stage of thought leaders in this important area. Based on the author’s demonstrated strong interest in this area and his strong goal orientation, I fully expect that he will evolve into one of the stars in this area. I, for one, will be keeping current as to his latest thoughts on this area – an area that has become so important with the evolution of changes in the workforce toward more corporate mobility and more self-employment (by choice).

After having read most of the personal branding books, I think this is the new best. It is very readable with clear, concise points and personal, vivid examples. The book has a refreshing scarcity of superficial platitudes. (I have no connection with the author.)
